Councilmember Scott Newton was elected to the City Council in 2020 and is committed to preserving the exceptional quality of life for the residents of Pismo Beach. Our city with its wonderful parks, coastal access, exceptional police and fire departments is a model for other cities, but we must continue to strive to make it even better and safer.

Scott serves on the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Authority (IWMA) where is has fought to ensure that the agency abides by its "Mandates Only" clause of its Joint Powers Agreement (JPA). This has allowed the IWMA to reduce its fees dramatically. He also is on the Board of Directors for SLO County Air Pollution District (APCD), has served on the Visit SloCal Advisory Committee, Liaison to the Shell Beach Improvement Group, Liaison to the Conference and Visitor's Bureau and Zone 3 Water Advisory Committee.
Scott comes from a farming family and farmed until he started his own sizable company that utilized both local salespeople and ecommerce. He knows firsthand the challenges of starting and running a business. After a successful sale of this business he began and continues to invest in real estate, construction, and manage the family farms. When Scott isn't serving the city or working, you can find him traveling and trying to keep up with his four kids, or restoring vintage vehicles.
Scott advocated for the new police and fire stations. Investing in public safety must always be a priority and we need leadership that will continue to do so.
Our water sources are prone to the effects of droughts and unfortunately environmental litigation threatens are water storage at Lake Lopez. We must invest in new water sources like Central Coast Blue and other new technologies.
Local government should strive to serve its residents. Permits can be complicated, confusing and time consuming. We need to continue to streamline the process.
While we now have some of the highest road scores in the State (after +15 million investment), there are still neighborhoods that we need to focus on. All residents deserve well maintained roads.
Our city must use its voice to restore more local control. The State has removed much our ability to enforce building code requirements (height, parking, setbacks, appearance) even within overly impacted areas. And the Coastal Commission continues to work against our residents homes, businesses and city infrastructure by not allowing sea walls (or they extort and unreasonable fee for allowing it).
Tourism is the main component of city's economy and provides the funds to keep our city government funded. This however doesn't mean that the needs of residents should not always be the priority. Tourism should always provide a net positive impact and allow for the enhancement of our quality of life. We must choose quality over quantity with our tourist events and attractions.
